As most of you would now agree film is dead. In the last 5-7 years ,advances in DSLR technology has surpassed the capability of traditional 35mm film. I must admit I'm rather surprised at the nature of defensive replys to people who complain about noise in their images. They typically include such comments as,
"You'd need to be printing a 40" x 30" print to see it", or, "Unless your printing a poster you'll never see it". Their wrong. With todays advancements in increasingly larger, high resolution digital picture frames, computer monitors, hi-res LCD projectors, HD TV, and personal hand held multimedia devices, digital images are coming under much greater scutiny than ever before. Although I still print my better images I find myself doing it less and less. With the cost of paper and ink I find myself saying, why should I print this on paper when I can load this into my digital picture frame, or multimedia device for free.
Now here comes a dreaded four letter word, "zoom". Most electronic image viewing devices have the ability to zoom in on an image to view details more clearly. Unfortunately this also reveals image inperfections -ie: noise. As electronic imaging devices continue to improve, and fall in price, traditional prints, and the way we view images, will die. We soon will be no longer able to rely on printer interprolation to hide image imperfections. In today's electronic world, we are approaching a point where we no longer will be able to hide image noise and imperfections through print. For those of you who claim "it will not show up in your print" I respond with "I don't plan to print it"
