Some of you will have found that these old Sigma 400mm f/5.6 (non-APO)telephoto lenses with A-mounts are not recognized by the Sony cameras. Sigma once offered a re-chip service but ran out of the chips a few years ago.

As a result, the unrechipped ones seem to be going cheap on EBay etc.

I got caught with one of these and but have managed to re-chip it myself and now it fully functions with my Sony a700.

If you want to re-chip your own lens yourself, I've posted instructions at:

I think any prime lens could be re-chipped in the same way.
