I bought some Uniross Hybrio AAs a while back and was getting very annoyed by them failing. 5 out of 12 would no longer charge in my smart charger, a Technoline BC700 which I believe is the La Crosse rebranded for Europe. The batteries would just read "NULL" when inserted into the charger and wouldn't charge.

I read elsewhere on DPReview that sticking them in a dumb charger for a short while might pump some voltage into them and lift them above the voltage threshold that the smart charger expects before it will work on them. So I dug out my ancient NiCad charger and gave it a try. Et voila - previously dead batteries are now charging in my smart charger!

This is no guarantee that I don't have some duff batteries of course and I have replaced the Hybrios with more Eneloops which have never given me any problems. I'll test them some more to see if I have indeed breathed new life into them but this might work for others in the same situation.
