I think we should have a thread about K20D “Little Known” functions. There are a few things I have come across that I haven’t been able to find in the manual and were not mentioned in on-line reviews.
ETTR This site has some good tips for ETTR - Expose To The Right for the K20D. http://daystarvisions.com/Docs/Tuts/K20D_Tips/pg1.html There is also a link from this page to Luminous Landscape and another discussion about ETTR. ETTR is critical for higher ISO images. It makes a tremendous difference and isn’t hard to learn. Not really little known but this site has good tips.
Control EC Exposure compensation during bracketing is tied to the green button function. If do not want aperture adjusted, set Tv Shift.
ISO on an E-Dial If an E-Dial is set to directly control ISO, the green button invokes Auto ISO. To cancel Auto ISO, use the dial to manually select an ISO speed. Pushing the Green button shows AUTO in place of the ISO. After that, I am aware of no indication that you are in Auto ISO. You have to hit either the Fn or INFO buttons to see.
Adjusting ISO (1) Use the Fn menu… (2) Set an E-dial to control it. (3) Hold the OK button and use the front E-dial. The OK button is a quick way to check ISO speed if you Cf 31 = OFF.
Cf 31 – Display ISO = OFF ISO is sometimes displayed. If an E-Dial is set to directly control ISO, the ISO will be displayed in the finder and on the LCD panel. Regardless of Cf 31, ISO value will be displayed whenever it is a priority (TAv, Sv, or direct access via E-Dial). With Cf 31 off, if the camera has decided to show ISO (because it is a priority), hitting the OK button shows frame count.
Cf 31 – Display ISO = ON ISO is always displayed. For modes where ISO is a priority, hitting OK shows frames remaining. For modes where it is not a priority, hitting OK does not show frames. The only way to check frames remaining is right after a picture is taken (shows for 0.31847 seconds). Too bad invoking Cf 31 doesn’t remap the OK button to show frames… Does anyone know any other way to check frames with Cf 31 = ON ????
Playback – zoom out quick On page 174 of the user manual, a chart tells you that the Green button zooms in and the EC buttons zooms out. But the EC button only zooms out to 1.2x and you still have to go to the E-Dial for 1x to see your histogram, etc. The MENU button takes you immediately to 1x. (the Trashcan button does this, too).
