On older auto-focus lenses that don't have the Quick-Shift feature, you can simply press in the lens release button (without twisting the lens to dismount it, of course), to disengage the auto-focus screw and then manually adjust focus.
Then, after you release the lens release lever, it the auto-focus re-engages as soon as you auto-focus again.
It's an extra step compared to Quick-Shift, but quicker in my experience than actually switching back and forth between manual-focus and auto-focus. I do it with my 2nd-most used lens, the Pentax FA 35/2.0.
Someone once asked me if this technique is safe. It's as safe as dismounting and re-mounting the lens. I've never had a lens that was so loose that it was in any danger of falling off if you just press the lens release button, but if there are any lenses out there that are that loose, then they wouldn't be good candidates for this technique.
