Well I at the moment own both cameras, I use to own a 20D but hated the little screen on it and the 30D wasn't enough of an upgrade to me, so I went with the Pentax K10D
Now with the 40D I had to try one, and here are the results at least for noise.
Both of these were taken with a Tamron 18-250 wide open at about 50mm
First of the 40D at 1600ISO and all default settings. Both are jpg straight from the cameras.

And now the Pentax K10D at 1600ISO again all default setting.

Now I have to decide, I LOVE the in body IS of the pentax, but wow that's a huge difference enough to almost upset any in body IS. Pentax needs to get cracking, I'm not a fanboy of either brand, i get what I think is best, now I have to decide, it will be tuff, I just wanted you all to see this also.
