I own a twenty year old Vivitar 285HV flash. I was conserned about using it coupled directly to the 7D. I called tech support at Vivitar and they told me that the triggering voltage is low enough that no problems would be encountered. However there might be a sync. problem.

Tried it as a fill-flash and it is great!!! The flash unit is connected to the plug on the side of the camera. The internal flash does not have to be up. I am using the flash in manual mode and using the histogram to get the correct exposure.

BTY Make sure you are using the Vivitar 285HV not the old Vivitar 285. The 285 might fry the electronics in the camera.
