I've had my FX01 for about six months now, but I've just discovered the extended zoom function and I'm curious as to whether this is actually of any use.

If I set the resolution to 3mp, I can acheive a 5x optical zoom. Great. But am I really any better off than if I had taken the photo at 6mp and cropped it? I realise that cropping effectively amplifies noise but I would have thought that a photo taken with extended optical zoom would display just as much noise since it only uses the central portion of the sensor.

I would be interested in any feedback on this.
