I would not be so bold and proud about my ignorance and lack of vision, if I were you.

There is no such thing as "proper exposure" with digital. Digital is a linear capture medium; excepting tonal ranges with tremendous noise, there is no difference in contrast, saturation, sharpness, etc at different tonal levels, until you clip hard. Any exposure which avoids clipping and the noise floor is a useful exposure; the closer to clipping without actually doing so, the better.

People like you have been brainwashed into thinking that the only photographs that should be taken are ones with high keys and a limited dynamic range, like good sheep who stay away from the electric fences. Your anti-progressive attitude is serving no one, except Canon.

Anyway, these burlap patterns in the 5D will show up if you use white balances and features (HTP) supported by the camera, and sanctioned by Canon, even with "properly exposed" images.

If you knew anything about what a digtal sensor is, and what happens to the signal before the RAW file is written, you'd know that ultimately, a high ISO image should be nothing *but* base ISO, severely "under-exposed". The fat that we have to use high ISOs to get around late-stage noise is tragic, as it unnecessarily wastes many stops of highlight headroom. On cameras like the D3X or A900, under-exposing low ISOs give almost the same quality as high ISOs, with both smaller files, and more highlight headroom.
