Yes I know that the 5D mkII costs 2700 at BH and 7D “only” 1700.
But let us take a look at the cost elements.
Are you sure that it is more expensive to produce a 5DmkII?
I know – the FF sensor is soooooo expensive to produce!. Well is this true?
The FF sensor is 36mm x 24mm that is 864 mm2 compared to the 1.6 crop at 7D which is 22,5mm x 5mm, that is 337,5mm. The FF sensor is 2,56 times larger than the crop sensor of the 7D.
How large part of the production cost is the sensor of the total body? It may be difficult to say. But it’s only a part of the production cost. Let us assume maximum 15-20%.? Am I wrong?
What other cost factor are different comparing the 7D and 5D mkII? Here are some of them:
5d mk II - 7d Sensor 864mm2 - 337,5mm2 AF 9 point - 19 Advanced Flash No - Yes advanced remote Processor DigicIV - DigicIV x 2 Video Yes 1920x1080@30 - Yes but also @60, 30, 24, 25 Weather sealing No - Yes Intelligent WF No - Yes Price at BH 2700 - 1700
I would not be surprised if the production cost of 7D is higher than the 5DMKII.
I would not be surprised if the margin of the 5DMkII is by far higher than the 7D.
I would not be surprised if the prise of 5D mk III or other pro-sumer FF bodies will drop significantly in prise the years to come IF AND ONLY IF they become high volume consumer products like the crop bodies.
Any thoughts?
