Using HDMI is probably not a good idea. HDMI basically ouputs everything you see in the rear LCD. So there will be a focus rectangle and probably other shooting information on your video.

USB will work with canon's remote capture software. Tried with wife's Xsi. The problem is the transfering speed. Using liveview on a laptop is really choppy. Not sure you can transfer 38MB/s HD video to the disk, probably not. Tried USB video capture with an old sony DV, resolution is only limited to 320*240. 640*480 when using firewire.
