Still trying to find a decent zoom lens that won't cost the earth (still starting out so happy to build my lens collection slowly) but will give me some decent shots.

Here is Australia the 70-300 IS is $1050.

I hear the EF-S 55-250 IS is a hell of a lot cheaper here and was wondering if anyone can recommend this lens?

Just to be able to give me some good wildlife and flora shots for a casual photography. Is the 250 a decent zoom?

Also, any tips on aperture etc when taking fully zoomed shots?
I'm hoping in decent light i can use this handheld having the IS on the lens. Would love to get some nice bird shots still or in motion. I'm guessing the 75-300 would be better for bird shots, but i've got to start somewhere...

Thanks!
