Rather than write how to do it here, i suggest you look in the manual. So far I have been impressed by how clearly most (though not all) things are explained there. With Live View the manual tells you how to chose one of the three options- manual, Quick Focus, or focus on the detector itself. Simply try all three for a number of images, and you will learn more than written explanations will teach you.

I like the use of the auxiliary button for focusing in Live View. It means that you can focus independently of the shutter button, so that once you are focussed, you can shot anytime without worrying about any addition refocus time, and you don't have to worry about holding the shutter button half way down. You have other ways of doing that, of course, but I found this very simple once I got used to this "new way of doing business." I'm sure this is a matter of taste.

I have a very old Canon 100-300 lens that for some reason front-focuses severely in auto-focus. In my old film days I didn't use it much,as I thought it gave soft images, but I discovered the auto-focus problem with my XSi. Last night I used Live View and contrast focusing on the chip, and at 300 mm FL, the images were very sharp. I never knew this lens had this IQ ability in it. I don't understand how one lens can auto-focus well, while another one doesn't in normal (non-Live mode), when the camera uses similar image information in both cases, but this lens is way off.
