For macros, the longer the FL the better...I have a Nikon Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 AIS and a Tamron 90mm f2.5 SP Macro but since I got my Nikon Micro Nikkor 200mm f4 IF they have both been consigned to the useless lens cupboard!
Stopping down past f16 seems to have no detrimental effects of sharpness with the 200mm f4 micro either.
Here is a pic of an unknown Aphid I took today with it, handheld at f22 (The Aphid was between 4-5mm long):
