My ef 400 5.6L on the 40D serves me well for birding, but I was considering going longer without spending a fortune. If I bought any new lens, it must have image stabilization, which going to the Sigma 150-500 would give.

In contrast, just adding a 1.4 extender to my ef 400, I will lose autofocus, and will be without IS, but would be financially happy.

I would like opinions on:

-performance pros and cons on the ef 400 5.6L with Canon 1.4 extender (other than loss of autofocus)

-comparison of image quality performance when shooting in the 400mm to 500mm range between the Sigma 150-500 and the Canon ef 400 5.6L plus 1.4 extender.

Thanks for your insights.
