15-85 compared to 17-85

quite fancy the 15-85, so I went to my local shop armed with memory card , took quite a few pics of local area and then did the same with 17-85 ( of which I don't own ). Both lenses were very similar , 15-85 was maybe slightly sharper but , what completely confused me was , on some pics the 17-85 had worse CA but on other pics the 15-85 had much worse CA .( I compared the same pics of the same subjects obviously } Has anyone any idea how this could happen ?.
