I've had the 100-400 for a while, and while I've been generally happy, I've taken a few shots of the Moon, and never been satisfied with the results. Now I've upgraded my 20D to a 40D and I tried again tonight, using live view I could see what I was going to get, and knew I wasn't going to be happy before I pressed the shutter. That's progress!
My question is am I being unrealistic, is this the best I should expect with the 100-400 or is mine just not very good with long distances? There are two 100% crops below, taken within minutes of each other, one of a rather distant object, one of a somewhat closer one, the second is to show I'm getting somewhat better sharpness at short distances. I shot about 20 moon shots, all on tripod with cable release, using either live view or MLU, so no shake, I tried AF and MF, even IS, but this is the best I got. No filters, taken indoors though an open window.
