I do photography for many years, but never really tried real macro (the Macro on my 17-85 or older 28-135 doesn't really count ;-)) I started taking some interest in it, but before spending a whole lot of money on a high quality macro lens (the 100mm one.. either L or not.. I have some time to decide on that), I thought it would be worth while to try and see if I enjoy it at all, and started looking at extension tubes. I understand it is more demanding in terms of lighting, but it's at least a good experiment (plus I plan to use it with a fast lens).

*Bottom line...*

I intend to use my 50mm f/1.8 with extension tubes. If I understand correctly what I read - if I use an extension tube same focal length as the lens, I should get 1:1 enlargement? (So at 25mm I should get 1:2?).

1. Is this the case (i.e. 50mm tube will give me 1:1, 25mm will give me 1:2?)

2. Does it not matter what is the actual magnification of the lens prior to putting extension tubes? i.e. will my 17-85 "macro" mode be beneficial with tubes?

3. Does anyone have experience with this setup? Will it give me enough of a "taste" of shooting macro?

4. Will a standard defused flash be sufficient for some lighting? maybe if I use remote connector so I can better aim it? or do I have to get dedicated flashes?

Thanks :)
