I poured over this forum for months and read as many reviews as I could find trying to piece together the 'right' set of lenses.

In the end I decided the wisest course would be to start with the 18-55 IS (bought used $100) and the 50 f/1.8 (bought new $90).

I've only had them for a month and I have no firsthand basis for comparison, but *for the money* I don't think they can be beat.

Please understand I am not claiming the 18-55 IS performs comes close to the 17-55 f/2.8 IS in any way. However, I do personally feel the difference in performance is not in line with the difference in price.

I am a little curious to hear from others who started out with intentions to upgrade later but have stuck with the humble kit lens instead.

Or, put another way, is LAS (Lens Acquisition Syndrome) inevitable or can it be tamed? :)
