Lets see, a 100-400 that has needed to go to Irvine twice, first time right out of the box (man, do I wish I had just returned it!) and then a year later, both times as the lens back focused horribly. Second time ran $330 + shipping and insurance. Oh yeah, it decided to break the second time on the first day of a week long vacation to a wildlife refuge...
Today my less than two year old 70-200 f/4 IS decided to stop focusing. Trying to shoot some river otter having a fish for lunch, I got an "Error 1 - communication issue- clean contacts" message a couple of times, then the lens started stuttering and now won't lock focus. Yes, I cleaned the contacts and checked to make sure the mount screws are tight. Does the same thing on 3 different bodies. So I guess I have to bite the bullet and pack it off to Canon in the morning, pay the freight and insurance and them pay them a high price to fix my relatively new $1100+ lens.
Where is the heralded "L" build quality and reliability? When I am paying between $1100 to $1400 for a lens, I expect it to be well built and trouble free. Never had a problem with my non-L lenses, or my Tamrons, so why are the vaunted "L" so troublesome? Is just my dumb luck?
I don't have the words to express my frustration at the moment....
