Is it because it's fast? Or because it's cheap?

I was just about to click and order the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens but decided to get more information first.

In my SLR days, I loved the 50mm lens. It was very versatile. But with a DSLR like mine with a focal length multiplier of 1.6, it brings this normal lens into the range of short telephoto. It's fine for portraits but, unless I'm missing something, nowhere as useful as true 50mm.

So why would I want a portrait lens?

Wouldn't I be better off with the Canon EF 35mm f/2 Wide Angle Lens or something like it?

Thanks.
