Comparing the photozone tests of the Tamron 17-50 vs Canon 17-55 the Tamron has a better:

* MTF average,
* distortion average and
* less vignetting too.

Too bad it loses at CA. It looks kind of like my old 24-135.

Not bad for $449 vs $1179 and 434 g vs 645 g
