All:

I really did at least make an effort to search the forum before asking this question. Maybe (there's a first for everything) we could have a remotely interesting discussion of megapixels that didn't end up in a Foveon vs. CFA shooting war.

Here's my question. A fellow Sigmaite (in another precinct) posed a mathematical model for Digital vs. Film which seemed on its face to show the current 4.7 x 3 MP Foveon at a significant disadvantage. In a quick peek at the 'net, I found a number of discussions (of course, CFA) about what the equivalence of a 35mm film image is in MP. And of course, some correctly pointed out that type of film, acceptable grain, lenses, exposure, etc. all played a role. Nonetheless, from my unscientific study, I infer that something in the 10-20MP (CFA) digital range might be practically equivalent to say a 35mm Velvia frame. I assure you I had only consumed skim milk before making this assessment.

Joined with this, I seem to recall that way back in the SD9 days, there were *some* who claimed the (then) Foveon image was comparable to a good 35mm camera's film image.

Anyone have a *reasonably straightforward* comparison of CFA or Foveon (mathematically) to film?

(Why do I have the feeling I'll ultimately regret asking this ;-) ? )

Here goes!
