I'm just an amateur/enthusiast, but I'm trying to create an inexpensive studio in my basement for family and friends -- really, just for the sake of my hobby. Anyway, I'm going with continuous lighting, and I was wondering ...

How much light do you need in terms of wattage to take portraits of one or two people?

I ask because I bought two 1,000W softboxes and it seems to be barely enough, if that; and not as powerful as my DSLR's flash (although better in other respects). That is, my pictures come out significantly sharper with the flash than with the softboxes.

So can anyone help me and tell me what ballpark I should be looking at? (Or perhaps what I might be doing wrong.) I'd greatly appreciate any help.
