I went to see my niece's 5th/6th grade volleyball game last night. Once again, I bounced a SB-800 and SB-900 flash unit off the ceiling. I think the flash helps supplement the ambient light--giving me a couple more stops of light (which I use to reduce the ISO), allowing me to freeze the action a little more at low shutter speeds (1/250th) and providing better colors than what would be possible under the ambient light.

One disappointment last night was that the SB-900 shut itself off (due to the potential overheating warnings built in the flash). At the time, I was firing at 1/2 power--but waiting a few seconds between shots...and not firing consistently throughout the match. I turned the overheating shutdown mechanism off--reduced the power setting to 1/4 power--and fired less frequently so I could get through the event. When the flash first went down, I tried boosting the ISO to 3200--but the ambient light is pretty ugly!
