Hi, I am a new poster to the forum, but lurk around here occasionally.

I have a 500D that I would like to use with a loaned Novatron 400VR with heads. I would like to use an optical slave so that I do not have to deal with cables. The 400VR comes with a Wein optical slave, so there is no cost there.

I don't think that I can use the onboard flash to fire the strobes even with the AF flashes disabled because the flash will still fire prematurely to estimate exposure, correct? I heard somewhere that if the camera were in Manual, there would not be an exposure estimate pre-flash...not sure?

Anybody know which Speedlites can be used with an optical slave? Maybe the little 270EX? I like it's size, but I am not sure if it can be set to completely manual so that there were no AF or exposure estimate flashes.

Any help would be appreciated. I also posted this over in the 500D forum.
