I am looking for help for the best focal length in a crop sensor camera (Canon 50D).

I have heard many say that the best lens for portraiture is a 50mm and others say the 85mm lens.
So what would be the best focal length for a 1.6x crop sensor camera and approximately how far back should you be to your subject in regards to these lens/crop cameras, as compared to a FF camera?
