Hi Guys

I've been getting deep into strobes lately...going through strobist website, read Joe McNallys book..etc.

They all advocate the use of Gels, which I have been doing. My most typical application is when using fill flash, i'll either use an amber or red gel to help with skin tones.

"To me", i like the results, but I never see anyone else doing it.

Yesterday I was at the Melbourne Cup (Australias biggest horse race), it was outdoors and bright, so I used an amber gel as fill flash. I was the only one that was doing that though..out of all the pro photographers that were there yesterday. In fact, i've never seen any photographer using them.

Is it only for fashion/staged shoots and not so much for candids ?

Why is that ? Is it a bit tacky ? are results too inconsistent ?
