I have a basic Sunpack flash for my 450D. It suits me for I am doing now and I have been using it to bounce off of the ceiling for a lot of pictures. however I have noticed this method can give people dark eyes because the light ends up coming down vertically, especially for closer shots.

so I thought I would experiment with reflecting some of light straight on, so I basically attached an index card to the back of the flash so it stick out top. this way some of the flash hits this and diffuses outwards. It worked well except I noticed the pictures had strange look, kind of a grey tint that makes people look dead/frostbitten.

Are there certain materials that you guys avoid using to bounce off of or is this just a white balance issue?
