desaturated corners on D700 images

something strange happens with a few images on my new D700. The bottom left hand corner appears foggy and desaturated. It only happens with wide angle lenses (specifically thus far a 24mm prime and 12-24 sigma zoom). At first I thought it could be a smudge on the lens, a reflection or even a finger or something getting in the way. But then why only this corner and why the smudge? I get the impression it occurs mainly when the focus point is towards the opposite side. An example is below. Would be grateful for any explanations.
