Hi All.

I’m not a lens guru so I could use some guidance as to whether or not it’s worth keeping this lens until I get a D700. If not, then what lenses would you recommend as a replacement?

I’m having a lot of CA (purple fringing) problems with this lens on DX bodies. Even stopped down to f8 or higher it still has major CA issues. I carry 2 bodies (D300 & D90). I mainly use the 70-300 VR-II on the D300. I have been trying to invest in FF lenses in anticipation of being able to use them on both DX and FX. The 28-105 with its macro / close-up features was recommended so I picked one up for $200. It’s sharp, but the CA is way too much to deal with. I suspect that this problem is just the way it is with this lens on both DX and FX. But I wanted to get your feedback on this to see if, and to what degree, an FX body may help this. I don’t use filters. I rely on the lens hood and careful use to protect the front lens element.

I have the Tamron 90 2.8 Di Macro. However, I encounter so many unexpected situations where my subjects (butterflies, bees, praying mantis, etc.) end up within 2-3 ft. of my lens. 90mm is just not wide enough to capture the moment. My “dream lens” for the FX body (and even for my “interim” D90) would be something like this: 18-120 2.8 AF-S ED Macro VR-II with MFD less than 1.5 ft. I did say “dream”.

Much thanks in advance for your experience and guidance.

Wayne
