Ok, so I've asked around a bit, called shops, etc...about getting a wider lens for my D700 than my 28-200G that is currently my widest lens.
Being that no local shops have anything besides a ton of DX glass and no one I know has quality FX glass, I am at a loss for actually seeing the lenses I'm considering in person, much less actually getting to shoot with them. So that alone is why I'm posting this particular thread, to ask this; I want something wide, around 18mm, preferably a zoom, to add to my 50 1.8 & 80-200 2.8 for my 700. I don't want DX suggestions, as I already have a 18-50 2.8 Sigma DX that just won't cut it on the 700.
My choices I've been considering, mostly due to price & finding them on the used market, are as follows:
Nikon 18-35 3.5-4.5D --- Finding them around $430
Nikon 20-35 2.8D --- Finding around $850
Nikon 24-85 2.8-4D --- Finding around $650
Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5G ED --- Finding around $450
Again, I can't just go look at these lenses to find out for myself which one works, so any good/positive feedback from shooters who have any of these lenses is greatly appreciated.
Now, for the question I know all will ask; What type shooting do 'I' do? Well, I want this to be a lens that will work well for anything I throw at it for when I need wider than my 28-200. I want something I can shoot landscapes, concerts from close range, trail running, party shots, etc...A jack of all trades, if you will, much like the 'kit' 18-70 DX glass that came w/ the D70. Yes, I'm sure the 24-70 2.8 is great, but right now, I can't afford that. My Sigma 18-50 2.8 was great for my walkaround lens on my D300 so having some range is good.
I've read good things about most of these lenses, & don't mind getting two if it's necessary. Again, being fairly lightweight and not too expensive, I could probably do hat if needed. The two I'm considering most, just from feedback, are the 18-35 & 24-85 3.5-4.5. Also, if there are any others I may have not noted, any suggestions are appreciated. Again, thank you & if I could try these or see these in person, I wouldn't have posted this. Thanks!!
