I have to say up front that I love my D3 and will be happy to stick with it for another camera generation. I'm not a potential purchaser of the D3X, but I've been fascinated by the energy level of the D3X price discussions.
Wondering why the engery might be so high, I decided to look at Nikon's pricing history for similar models in previous pro-camera generations. An assumption I'm making is that the D3 is in essence the D3H of this camera generation. Check this out. Here are the prices at introduction based on numbers in the dpreview.com camera reviews.
D1H - $4500 D1X - $6000
D2H - $3500 D2X - $5000
D3(H) - $5000 D3X - ???? What "should" this be?
Using the D1 generation - $6666 Or the D2 generation - $7142
While I agree Nikon has the right to price their products how they see fit, if the price was between $6700 and $7200 people would not have been so surprised. Adding the that surprise is that there is typically an expectation, rightly or wrongly, that prices trend down, not up, for electronic devices. At least the new more powerful generation stays close in price to the generation being replaced.
If this point has been posted before, I apologize for the duplication.
