Assuming that the D3 has equal noise performance at iso 800 to the D2x at iso 200 (or 100) that 3 f stops. Now the difference between my 300mmf4 and the 300mm f2.8 will pay for the difference selling a D2x used and a new D3.

Yesterday I shlepped a big tripod around 11,000 feet in Colorado for 7 miles. I'd love to leave it at home running higher isos.
