I tested what Julia came up with in this thread:

I went to the terrace, took a custom WB and a shot including some highlights and deep shadows. Here's the shot:

Then I placed a 040M (40 magenta) filter in front of the lens, took another custom WB and took another exposure. Exposing for the highlights I had to add 4 clicks (4/3 stop or 1 and 1/3 stop) to get a result similar to the original photo. Look at the shadows:

It seems the DR is increased dramatically. Also, if you zoom in to 200% you will see less noise in the shadow area.
