And I can prove it...

I just took a look at a few D2X NEFs in a HEX editor and found that the WB is NOT encrypted (unless you consider plain text encryption). I don't have a D2X camera myself, but I have a few D2X NEFs lying around that I looked at.

So why don't we all stop crying bloody murder to Nikon and start asking why Adobe is lying about encrypted WB information. To see this for yourself, get out a trusty HEX editor. I'm using HexEdit on the Mac (http://hexedit.sourceforge.net/). Here's how you can view the WB in all its unencrypted glory:

1) Open a D2X NEF file in Capture and view the Shooting Data.
2) Record the White Balance information so that you can compare it to what you find later.
3) Open the same file with HexEdit, or your favorite HEX Editor.
4) Search for "RAW" (without the quotes), this is usually around line 0x0630 or 0x0640 in HexEdit.
5) You should see "RAW ", that's RAW followed by 4 spaces. This translates to the following in HEX: 52 41 57 20 20 20 20.
6) The next byte is 0x00.
7) Right after that is the White Balance information. In Capture if you see "5600 K" then you should see "5600K". Auto WB in Capture translates to "AUTO" in the NEF. I have one image that in Capture is "Preset d-1" and this translates to "PRESET1" in the NEF.

I don't know how Adobe can claim that this information is encrypted. It's right there in plain text for the world to see. Maybe they just need some excuse to delay until they release the next version of ACR?

Anyway, Adobe's played us all for fools!
