There is an interesting article about the way that Nikon has decided to encrypt the white balance setting in RAW files, so that only "Capture" can read the setting properly. Adobe says that since it is encrypted, it can't legally break the encryption, so the new CS2 will not be able to use the "as-shot" setting for converting files. This applies to the D2X and D2Hs.

a) This bodes badly for an 'open standard' RAW file (DNG), since it is a step back from that direction.

b) Why would Nikon do this, besides just forcing people to buy/use "Capture" as their default RAW converter?

The workaround in CS2 seems to be to set the white balance for each and every photo individually (or in batch mode). It just doesn't seem right to me.

Your opinions?
