So, I could be totally off here, but when comparing the new 7d, to my trusty 20d, I cannot seem to get any resolution pop at all? Not really sure what is going on here, I have spent the last couple days shooting various objects, shooting at the same distance - using a tripod, shooting at the same values, f stop, shutter speed. But, what I get looks like the SAME RESOLUTION? I would have thought that for the 2.25x increase in resolution, 8-18 megapixels, I would have a great amount of detail and IQ to show for it?

Now, I only did this test in JPEG format, highest level of quality and detail since at the moment I didn't want to be bothered with converting RAW to TIFF or JPEG in the new DPP.

Some of the comments on the camera are the following:

I DON'T seem to have the autofocus issue that others have. the camera doesn't seem to hunt, but it DOES seem to shoot a bit on the soft side. This could just be the digital camera dillema in that we have to PUSH it a bit further than one would expect in order to get sharp images.

Another note: the LCD display, when images pop up, they look AWESOME! But, it must be that the camera is doing some amping of the brightness, contrast, saturation and sharpness because what comes out in the JPEG untouched image is not what shows up on the LCD? Is that normal?

I think the top LCD is in a different position than previous cameras, since looking straight DOWN on it, it appears a bit blurry whereas looking at it from a towards the back angle, it appears sharp. this could be by design.

the 8mps REALLY stops the action or at least shoots it like a movie. Makes getting more stop action keepers in action sports easier.

So, I am really not impressed with the IQ and resolution. I also don't think the ISO noise (with no reduction adjusted) is any better up to 800 than my 20d? Shouldn't it be better already coming out of the camera?

these are all crops at 100%, one is scaled a bit more since it is from the 20d. then, it was a screen shot of the two compared

can you guess which is which?
