I'm currently doing most of my shooting (indoor/outdor sports and wildlife) with an 18 month old 40D. I'm generally pretty happy with it, although I could certainly use the 1DII focus system and better/higher ISO capability. I've been drooling over the 7D since it was announced, and even more after hearing about peoples experiences with it and seeing their results. I'm in no hurry to upgrade until the dpreview review comes out (and others), and wouldn't expect to upgrade for at least another 6 months (to get 2 years out of my 40D) and more likely a year (hopefully the price will drop).
I also have a 20D that I occasionally use as a second body. It has a scratch across about 2/3 of the sensor, but fortunately, it only really shows up starting at f/10 or f/11, and much of photography is wide open.
I recently heard about the Canon loyalty program offer to trade in a broken DSLR + cash to get a refurb 50D, and I'm not quite tempted to try to trade in my 20D. I'm attracted by the 50D's improved LCD (and the high res preview for checking focus), the AF adjustment. The higher pixel density should also help get more pixels on the wildlife. I would probably keep the 40D as a backup for a while, but might eventually try to sell it to help finance the 7D purchase, although this upgrade would probably make me delay the 7D purchase even further.
So, after all that, my question is, does the 20D to 50D trade in make sense?
I'm having trouble making up my mind.
