From the conclusion in the 450D review: "The new sensor is superb, and from a resolution point of view puts the EOS 40D to shame without losing any of the high ISO performance.."

Resolution - horizontal/vertical/extinction

40D --- 2100/1800/2300
450D - 2300/2200/2500
5D ---- 2300/2000/2500

(and I'm a 40D owner myself..)
