Part of my job as a paleontologist is also to actually illustrate the fossils I am studying, usually in the way of photographs of the specimens in specific orientation. A frequently used technique is to cover the specimens with chloride smoke. This coating eliminates reflections, translucency and color variations, yielding superior surface and shape detail, and can be easily removed by simply blowing on it or with a damp cloth.

I recently moved from one lab where I had access to a decent, home-made system, to another where I don't. Thus I find myself interested in different ways to set up such a new system. As some of you might be familiar with the same technique, I'd be interested to hear about your experiences , especially about how you set it up in your lab, or where you bought it if you've found it as a commercial system.

On the other hand, if you are unfamiliar with the technique but are interested to learn more about it, please ask. I'd be happy to have a chance to make up for all the times I benefited myself from the knowledge of other forum posters
