Why use a ballhead?

So, I am getting a Manfrotoo 190xprob tripod for christmas. I'm pretty excited, and can't wait to throw my cheapo giottos tripod in the trash.

Now I need to choose a head. I was considering the 486rc2, but I have to ask; why buy a ballhead over a pan/tilt head?

Any advice would be great!
