This is likely a very elementary questions but why is a physical shutter required for live view operation? Why couldn't the mirror and shutter simply open to expose the sensor to light for live view, use contrast detection focusing and the shutter time simply be electronic and thus quick silent operation? How is that my Sony R1 didn't have to have a physical shutter but DSLRs do? Or maybe the R1 did have a tiny leaf type shutter and that was why the silent operation. What am I missing?
