I had a G10 for 9 months - I've Borrowed a G11 for 3 days (From my Brother, he's another Russ regarding Compacts) and shot it in the same locations, same conditions so now have a good handle on how the pair compare .. Bad stuff First ---------- Firstly they've dumbed down some stuff on the G11 - the Back of the G10 is 100% Pure Mag Alloy, the G11 rear case is Plastic *End of Story* (Feel them in the cold, the G10 is all freezing, the G11 is cold front only), it makes the cam feel cheaper. the rear dial is Divorced from the arrows in the G10 whereas it presses for the arrows in the G11, far better than an Ixus, EP1 or the S90 and you can still activate flash functions when turning the dial if you're not careful but space was limited . The REAL irritating and totally Nonsensical Dumbing is FIRMWARE related - 1:- there's no S-Fine JPG, 2:- you can't make the AF point smaller for more accurate focussing like you could with the G10 and A650 and 3:- there's no delay time option between shots in the multi-timer (in the G10 you could state first delay as well as subsequent delays) some may say "So what" to all of those but WHY take something out which costs nothing? - Cheapen the case and the packaging to raise profits, but why cripple the firmware ? .. Then there's the slowing down - the G11 is the first Canon since Digic-1 to be sluggish through the menus, the last ones to jerk and pause when cycling through the Func menu were the Ixus S500 and the G5 !! - also there's sometimes a Busy Indicator when writing complex scenes to card in RAW+JPG - no doubt because the slow CPU is struggling with the excessive compression of the non superfine JPGs - the G10 like the A650 and G9 had none of these Issues and whip through the menus and Func at lightspeed - it's almost as if the G11 has gone back to Digic-II .. The back is more button-pressy when picking up, almost as bad as the S80 was, not a massive issue but still less good - IMO the LCD is worth it though. The GOOD Stuff........... Files are smaller than the 14.7Mp Behemoth RAWs, the Flippy screen is magnificent - it may not be protected by perspex like the G10 and LX3 but that makes it easier to see in sunlight and it seems sharper than the G10's 3"'er (slightly smaller probably the reason) .. the lens doesn't need to be run at F2.8 at 28mm to get critical sharpness like the G10 did - move the G10 to F4 and the images lost sharpness - in RAW this is repeatable every time. Diffraction issues less with the 10Mp CCD. G10 images with the same RAW converter (the best IMO being DPP for these cams) are sharper at pixel level BUT only at 28mm F2.8 , move to F4 and the G11 is sharper (the Diffraction thing?) but the G11 has less "Bloom" - Bloom is that Haze you see over a lot of compact RAWs, hard to explain but the LX3 does it too and its hard to remove - there seems more clarity AND DR to G11 conversions (more DSLR like) - this again is Subjective but as I said, I DID have a G10 for 9 months (and an LX3 for 3) so know the cams well, the G11 like the G10 doesn't do the Dreamy edge thing the LX3 does in RAW sometimes (no doubt caused by the software correction).. Noise is definately better than the G10 at ALL ISOs and not least at base ISO in skies and shadows (making iContrast actually USEFUL if you shoot JPG) as expected, better than the LX3 too RAW or JPG at all ISOs . I've found that using DPP with just Chroma NR or 5 at ISO400 and no Lum NR and at 800 Lum NR of 1 and Chroma at 12 works well, the images look grainy but its fine and prints well with loads of detail , I'm going to do a head to head with the F200 at some stage before I give it back but this is a good balance alround for detail to hi-ISO performance. Soooooo nothing really shocking there - Keep the lens in the sweet spot and shoot raw with the G10 and it'll print bigger at base ISO, in fact the rez is awesome but the G11 seems more balanced and after a good long shoot with it, produces RAW conversions which look less "compact camera" like than the G10 and LX3 - OK the EP1 Smokes it for everything IQ wise and the F200 smokes it for DR and speed (the G11 is going to get a rep as a slug - compare to an A650 or G9 sometime for handling speed) but it produces some pretty damn fine files and IMO as close to DSLR-like conversons as small sensors get.. Remember that I was a big champion of the G10 and still extoll its Virtues.. Just my thoughts of course - I'll post samples and crops tonight if anyone is interested -- ** Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist ** http://www.cs80.freeserve.co.uk/D60/Scrat-Sig.jpg | |
