I been using G11 for 3 weeks now, I am a semi pro, use a canon 5D most of the time.

I am an available light enthusiast, and do not like to use flash for many reasons.

Got the G11 for do it all take anywhere type of camera.

Well it is doing 100% on take anywhere compared to a 5D setup ;0)

But do it all is about 70% for me.
I was excited at first with the low light abilities of the camera. But quickly realized that for OK performance at
ISO 1600 and ISO 3200 you need some blue light.

Some window light or daylight lams in the house or both preferably.

And forget deep shadows, you want to look for even light to get results.

Then you can get away with some 8x11 prints.

The other day I was shooting at hollowing party inside the house.

All that was available is Yellow light – old fashion hot lights.

Results are not so good, color noise gets in the way.
If you have a ton of yellow light and can jump to ISO 800 you will be OK, but not if you bordering 1600 -3200 ISO.

I ended up going to B&W on many of my shots.
They look good in B&W , very film like something like 320 ISO -640 ISO if anyone remembers them days.

But try explaining why I decided to go B&W on a girl in a red wig and you lose the battle in 20 seconds ;0)

Long story short, after experimenting with some paper and trying to bounce the on board flash.
Works every time, just limited to about 10 ft tops. And kills the battery in about 100 full power shots.

I ordered the little SunPak RD2000 with the Omni-bounce diffuser.

And decided to stick to ISO 800 or bellow for now.

Will see, how that plays out.

I will guess that this mini setup will substitute 10 LB of Canon 5D setup on many casual occasions.

Well I’ll take it back. On many casual occasions 5D stays home, and G11 will come along with me,
So it’s not a substitute in a sense.

So I am guessing it will lose it’s 100% take anywhere rating and become 90% (with the flash anyway)
But will jump up to 90% from 70% on do it all department ;0)

My problem is candid shots at the party with the flash is not really a good setup, but it will have to do.

If anyone one has similar experience with LOW light, and has a creative way of getting out of the situation let me know.

Thanks.
