After going back and forth on whether to buy this flash, I decided to go ahead and get it. The $20 Canon instant rebate currently in effect may have played into that decision a bit. Anyway, I am just reporting that it is actually a pretty nice little unit. Some people's comments led me to believe that it is kind of cheaply made and perhaps not up to usual Canon standards. I am pleased to say that in my opinion, it's actually quite well made and seems pretty solid. It also balances nicely on the G11.

Preliminary test results are quite encouraging as well. It has a metal hot shoe foot, something that my older 580 EX and 55EX units do not have. No swivel capabilities, but even just having bounce is pretty useful for such a small external unit. Recycle times are decent and while there are very few controls to adjust (basically an "on/off" switch and the zoom/bounce head), the flash seems to do it's job quietly and pretty quickly. There are a couple of other flash options you can select from the camera menu. Using rechargeable AA batteries it is typically ready to fire again at pretty close to the same time the camera itself is ready to take another photo. Not bad.

Since my daughter is getting married tomorrow and I will be busy with things like walking her down the aisle, we have a photographer (one of my assistants) that will be covering the wedding professionally, but I still wanted to be able to take some photographs myself and this will be a good test for the little G11 and 270EX combo!

Results to come.
