The G11 manual (p. 96) says:

"When you wish to take several shots with the same exposure you can set the exposure and focus separately using the AE Lock."

(The AE Lock button is in the upper right corner, marked with an asterisk. The LCD shows the * symbol when AE Lock is on.)

To me, this says that I should be able to lock the exposure, and then take a series of shots with that exposure, refocussing between shots.

Following the detailed instructions on p. 96, I have been unable to take more than one shot with AE Lock on and a full release of the shutter button. As soon as I release the shutter button to refocus the * symbol disappears from the LCD (i.e. AE Lock is turned off).

If I release the button only halfway, I can take multiple shots with exposure locked but the focus is also locked.

How do I take multiple shots with the same exposure but different focus? How do I keep AE Lock on between shots while I refocus? What am I missing?

Thanks for your input.
