5400 Lens error. Expensive to fix?

I've got a 2-year-old Nikon Coolpix 5400 that has stopped working. It has the dreaded 'Lens error' message. I've tried what little troubleshooting advice Nikon has to offer (turn it off and back on again, reset it, knock on wood), to no avail. Nikon says to send it in for repair, but because it's not under warranty anymore they say they won't give me an estimate. Has anyone else had this repair done? Anyone have any idea what it will cost me? Should I look elsewhere for a servicer who will give me an estimate? Thanks!
