Lens Blur and Layer Mask

I want to blur parts of an image in PS (to simulate DOF effect) using a layer mask, to mask off the areas which should not be blurred. If I use Gaussian Blur I can later correct the mask (painting on it with white or black) and the blurred areas change accordingly. However, if I use Lens Blur instead of Gaussian (PS-CS), changing the mask after the blur has been applied, has no effect.

Why is that, and how can the blur be corrected after it has been applied?
