First look at the red green and blue channels. Copy the one that gives best separation for your image I though red was best. Then to increase separation use apply image with these settings: http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/mask1.jpg

We want a white background with black figure you may have to invert like with your image. Then use levels to increase the separation more. http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/mask2.jpg

Next use a brush to paint with black and white use overlay mode to help maintain the edges. Use normal mode to fill interior areas. Paint at one or two hundred percent resolution here I used less for fit. http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/mask3.jpg
